Many travelers assume that Playa del Carmen has its own airport. That’s not the case.
If you’re planning your trip, choosing the closest airport to Playa del Carmen is one of the first decisions you’ll need to make. The main options are Cancun International Airport (CUN), Cozumel International Airport (CZM), and Tulum International Airport (TQO).
Each one offers a different balance of distance, travel time, and flight availability. So picking the right airport can shape your entire arrival experience.
Cancun International Airport: the best option for Playa del Carmen
When searching for flights to the Riviera Maya, you’ll quickly notice that most routes, and often the best prices, are available through Cancun Airport (CUn).
This is because Cancun International Airport connects with a wider range of airlines and international destinations than any other airport in the region.
Beyond convenience, Cancun International Airport stands out for its size and infrastructure.
Airport facts:
Official name: Aeropuerto Internacional de Cancún. Its airport code is: CUN. It opened in 1975, and it currently handles over 25 million travellers a year,
Location: about 53 km (33 miles) from Playa del Carmen
Time to PDC: 45 to 60 minutes, depending on traffic and transportation. No ferries, no extra steps, just a straight drive to your hotel.
Getting to Playa del Carmen from Cancun Airport is also easy, with many transportation options to match different budgets and travel styles:
- Private transfer (fastest and most comfortable)
- Shared shuttle (more affordable, with multiple stops)
- ADO public bus (budget-friendly and reliable)
- Rental car (ideal if you plan to explore the region)
- Taxi (easy to hop in, but irregular prices)
- Maya Train (scenic, but runs infrequently and requires additional transportation)
A piece of advice:
With better fares and plane frequencies, it is the best alternative if you are visiting either Playa del Carmen or any other destination in the Riviera Maya.
Believe us, transportation through 307 road is fast and easy, and you’ll get to PDC in no time at all.
Please remember that if you need any kind of transportation, to or from Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen or any other destination in Riviera Maya, you can always book your shuttle with Best Cancun Shuttle.
You book in advance, avoid stress, and focus on what really matters: enjoying your trip.
Cozumel International Airport. the closest in a straight line
When looking at a map, Cozumel International Airport is actually the closest airport to Playa del Carmen in a straight line.
Beyond location, Cozumel Airport is smaller and offers fewer flight options compared to Cancun. And that impacts availability and pricing.
Since Cozumel is an island, getting to Playa del Carmen requires an additional ferry transfer, which adds time, logistics, and cost to your journey.
Airport facts:
- Official name: Aeropuerto Internacional de Cozumel. Its airport code is: CZM. Only a limited number of airlines have international routes to Cozumel compared to those in Cancun.
- Location: on Cozumel Island, about 20 km (12 miles) from Playa del Carmen (in a straight line).
- Time to PDC: It can take up to 1.5 hours, as it includes:
- Taxi or transfer from the airport to the ferry terminal (20 minutes).
- Ferry crossing from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen (around 35–45 minutes).
- Additional transfer from the ferry terminal to your accommodation (20 minutes).
A piece of advice:
Fly to CZM only if you HAVE TO or you are staying directly on the Island. Having worked in tourism for so many years, we have seen how passengers have to deal with multiple transportation steps, with ferry schedules that get cancelled because of weather conditions, and all the way, handling heavy luggage.
Believe us, the total travel time can be longer than expected, despite the short distance.
Tulum, the “newest” international airport in Riviera Maya.
Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport (TQO) is the latest airport serving the Riviera Maya. It opened in December 2023, and it was designed to bring travelers closer to destinations like Tulum and the surrounding area.
However, for those heading to Playa del Carmen, it may not be as convenient as it first appears. The airport is located significantly farther south, which means longer transfer times and higher transportation costs compared to Cancun.
Some airport facts:
- Official name: Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport. Airport code: TQO. It opened on December 1, 2023, and it can handle up to 5.5 million passengers annually in its sole terminal with 13 gates.
- Located: about 104 km (65 miles) south of Playa del Carmen
- Time: in short, you can spend about 2 hours traveling to your final destination with transportation costs of around $ 250 USD / trip one way.
A piece of advice:
Yeah! Tulum airport is far less busy than Cancun’s, and you can move faster through immigration, customs, and luggage claim. It can feel like a calmer, more relaxed arrival experience.
But most of the time, it does not add much to the Cancun airport.
Unless you have a very specific time of arrival or an unusually good airfare deal, flying into Cancun is still the most practical choice.
With more than 7 years of experience taking visitors here and there, the ride from Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen through the 307 highway is an easy-breezy experience.
You can book your private shuttle from any airport to Playa del Carmen or any other destination in Riviera Maya right now, with transparent fixed prices and a hassle-free experience with Best Cancun Shuttle.
