Official name: Aeropuerto Internacional de Cancún. Its airport code is: CUN. It opened in 1975, and it currently handles over 25 million travellers a year, 

Location: about 53 km (33 miles) from Playa del Carmen

Time to PDC: 45 to 60 minutes, depending on traffic and transportation. No ferries, no extra steps, just a straight drive to your hotel.

Getting to Playa del Carmen from Cancun Airport is also easy, with many transportation options to match different budgets and travel styles:

Cozumel International Airport. the closest in a straight line

When looking at a map, Cozumel International Airport is actually the closest airport to Playa del Carmen in a straight line.

Beyond location, Cozumel Airport is smaller and offers fewer flight options compared to Cancun. And that impacts availability and pricing.

Since Cozumel is an island, getting to Playa del Carmen requires an additional ferry transfer, which adds time, logistics, and cost to your journey.

• Official name: Aeropuerto Internacional de Cozumel. Its airport code is: CZM. Only a limited number of airlines have international routes to Cozumel compared to those in Cancun.
• Location: on Cozumel Island, about 20 km (12 miles) from Playa del Carmen (in a straight line).
• Time to PDC: It can take up to  1.5 hours, as it includes: 

• Taxi or transfer from the airport to the ferry terminal (20 minutes).
• Ferry crossing from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen (around 35–45 minutes).
• Additional transfer from the ferry terminal to your accommodation (20 minutes).

A piece of advice:

Fly to CZM only if you HAVE TO or you are staying directly on the Island. Having worked in tourism for so many years, we have seen how passengers have to deal with multiple transportation steps, with ferry schedules that get cancelled because of weather conditions, and all the way, handling heavy luggage.

Tulum, the “newest” international airport in Riviera Maya. 

Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport (TQO) is the latest airport serving the Riviera Maya. It opened in December 2023, and it was designed to bring travelers closer to destinations like Tulum and the surrounding area.

However, for those heading to Playa del Carmen, it may not be as convenient as it first appears. The airport is located significantly farther south, which means longer transfer times and higher transportation costs compared to Cancun.

Some airport facts:

• Official name: Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport. Airport code: TQO. It opened on December 1, 2023, and it can handle up to 5.5 million passengers annually in its sole terminal with 13 gates.
• Located: about 104 km (65 miles) south of Playa del Carmen
• Time: in short, you can spend about 2 hours traveling to your final destination with transportation costs of around $ 250 USD / trip one way.

A piece of advice:

Yeah! Tulum airport is far less busy than Cancun’s, and you can move faster through immigration, customs, and luggage claim. It can feel like a calmer, more relaxed arrival experience.

But most of the time, it does not add much to the Cancun airport.

Unless you have a very specific time of arrival or an unusually good airfare deal, flying into Cancun is still the most practical choice.
